I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Mark Rae of Rae & Christian fame for WhoSampled in support of his new album and autobiographical book ‘Northern Sulphuric Soulboy’.
Blurb from WhoSampled:
“For the latest edition of our interview series, we speak with Mark Rae, one half of production duo Rae & Christian whose Mercury Award nominated debut album ‘Northern Sulphuric Soul’ featured vocals from guests including Jeru the Damaja, YZ and the Jungle Brothers. In subsequent years Mark has produced and remixed artists including Jay Z, The Pharcyde, Dawn Penn, Bobby Womack and Amy Winehouse. Mark’s career in music extends beyond production, having founded Manchester’s Grand Central record label and played a prominent role in the running of the Fat City record store and its associated label and club nights. Mark is a long time friend of WhoSampled, having contributed music to our Samplethon project and having hosted our very first WhoSampled interview with The Mohawks almost exactly 5 years ago. At the time that this interview was recorded, Mark was in the process of compiling his autobiographical album and book, for which the working title was then ‘Stories from the Stylus’. The book and album, now titled ‘Northern Sulphuric Soulboy’ in reference to Rae & Christian’s debut album, was released earlier this week.”
