The Classic Material club night’s first home was East London’s City Arts and Music Project, where the night’s Hip Hop history format played out over a year and a half. Each month DJs would play only music from a specific year in Rap history from 1979 to the year 2000. This initial series of nights was followed by a variety of Hip Hop photography/design exhibitions and product launches. The night eventually moved to Camden’s famous Jazz Cafe where Classic Material hosted a catalogue of Hip Hop greats including Funkdoobiest, Lords of the Underground and EdO.G.
