Samplethon is a first of its kind ‘Hackathon for music producers’ run by WhoSampled. The event format sees 20 producers provided with pre-cleared sample material from a renowned label and given just 6 hours to produce a track using only the provided material. Three winning tracks from each event go on to be released on vinyl alongside tracks from the event’s panel of judges and mentors. Panelists have included artists such as Roni Size, Breakage, Mark Rae, Soundsci and Mr Thing. To date there have been three events in partnership with venues and organisations including Ableton, Audeze, Great Escape Festival, Point Blank Studios and Metropolis Studios. Source material has focused heavily on the golden era of Library Music, with label partners including Cavendish’s Boosey & Hawkes library, Universal’s Bruton Imprint and Sony’s iconic KPM Green Sleeves series. I have contributed a track to each of the vinyl releases. The partnership with Boosey & Hawkes gave rise to a compilation album of the source material, ‘The Library Archive‘, now in its second volume, compiled by Mr Thing & I, a full length album from Soundsci, for which I wrote the liner notes, and a number of remixes of tracks from the label’s back catalogue.
